Under Japanese law, immigration authorities can refuse entry to those who have been convicted of drug-related offences.

Socialite Paris Hilton was refused entry into Japan where she was scheduled to promote her fashion range after she admitted of cocaine possession before a Las Vegas court.

Hilton was found to have just under a gram of cocaine in her purse which she then tried to claim did not belong to her. She was officially charged and given one year’s suspended jail sentence, a $2,000 fine and 200 hours of community service as part of a plea deal, just hours before she boarded the plane to Japan.

The immigration officers refused to let the 29 year old socialite into the nation. She was tested at Tokyo’s Narita airport for six hours before being placed at the Airport Rest House.

"Paris was contractually bound to her business trip and didn’t want to let down her brands and many Asian fans". "She is trying hard to do the responsible thing, but this is beyond her control. She is very disappointed," the spokeswoman added.

Just hours before her visit, Hilton appeared in the Las Vegas court and pleaded guilty of owning cocaine and obstructing a policeman. She was given a 12 month suspended jail term.
