Preparations for a parade on Octuber 1 that is to be a display of China’s growing political and military strength have consumed the country’s top leadership. Tanks and lorries roll through Beijing to mark 60th anniversary of communism in China.

Tens of thousands of schoolchildren, who had slept in Tiananmen Squareovernight, formed a human screen, flipping over coloured cards tocreate slogans including "Loyalty to the party" and "Harmonioussociety" as tanks and amphibious landing craft, many painted inpixellated khaki, rolled past.

President Hu Jintao is expected to give a speech, followed by China’sfirst military parade in a decade with performances involving 200,000people, floats, and of course lots of fireworks.

There will be nearly20 songs played during the parade and two-dozen during the pageantinterspersed with recordings of former leaders Mao Zedong, DengXiaoping and Jiang Zemin, and current President Hu Jintao.
