Brazil was a colony of Portugal from the landing of Pedro Álvares Cabral in 1500 until its independence in 1822. Brazil occupies a large area along the eastern coast of South America and includes much of the continents interior region.

Christ Redeemer Statue in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

The Christ Redeemer statue was designed by Heitor da Silva Costa and carved by French sculptor Paul Landowski. The Christ Redeemer statue took five years to construct and was inaugurated on October 12, 1931.

Rio de Janeiro

Rio de Janeiro, was discovered on January 1, 1502 by Portuguese navigators who mistook the entrance of Guanabara Bay for the mouth of a river. Sixty years later because French traders in search of pau-brasil (Brazilwood) were routinely "visiting" the area the Portuguese crown established the city of Sao Sebastiao do Rio de Janeiro. After 2 years of bloody conflict the French were expelled and settlers began to cultivate the surrounding fertile lands.

Brasília is the capital of Brazil, located in the central part of the country.

Building of the city began in 1956 with Lúcio Costa as the principal urban planner and Oscar Niemeyer as the principal architect. In 1960,it formally became Brazils capital. When seen from above, the citysshape resembles an airplane or a butterfly.
