One journalist even managed to fry an egg on the hotspot. The half-finished 37-storey tower in central London has been thus dubbed the "Walkie Scorchie". Sunlight reflected from skyscraper is causing heat damage below. One shopkeeper said the glare caused his doormat to start smoking and damaged a lemon, another said it blistered paint - and one journalist even managed to fry an egg with the startlingly bright rays.

A spokesman for the joint developers Land Securities and Canary Wharf today admitted: ”We did do solar analysis and modelling but it wasn’t picked up. That is always a risk with a building with a new shape.” The “Walkie Scorchie” phenomenon lasts for around two hours a day and will come to a natural end in about three weeks’ time as the autumnal sun stays closer to the horizon.

It was this week renamed the Walkie Scorchie when it was found that the concave shape of the building was channelling the sun’s rays into a concentrated beam onto Eastcheap, capable of singeing carpets, blistering paintwork and even melting parts of a car’s bodywork.

The developers of the “Walkie Talkie” tower in the said had been aware of the risk of the curved glass building acting as “a giant magnifying glass” but had concluded there would not be a problem. ”We did do solar analysis and modelling but it wasn’t picked up. That is always a risk with a building with a new shape,” a spokesman for the joint developers Land Securities and Canary Wharf admitted.

Unbelievable: An egg is fried in intense sunlight reflected from the Walkie-Talkie building, in Eastcheap in the City of London, where sun light reflected from the building melted part of a Jaguar car.

As responsible developers we are making every effort to keep local businesses informed and we have communicated with them regularly since the issue first appeared. While we investigate the situation further we have liaised with the City of London to suspend three parking bays in the area which may be affected."

The architect has a track record of creating buildings that burn. His Vdara hotel in Las Vegas, with a similarly concave form, focused sunlight onto the pool terrace in 2010, hot enough to melt loungers and singe guests’ hair. The glass has since been covered in non-reflective film.

The developers have blamed the problem on "the current elevation of the sun in the sky" Further damage: The seat of a bicycle parked near the building was also allegedly singed by the blinding light.
