Kidney cancer drug Votrient may help some thyroid cancer

One recent phase II clinical trial reported in the medical diary The Lancet Oncology proposes the kidney cancer drug Pazopanib or Votrient, made by GlaxoSmithKline, may be used to treat a very fast growing thyroid cancer.  The trial results presented advanced differentiated thyroid cancer in about 49 percent of the patients answered well to Pazopanib, with more than two thirds having a response that lasted longer than one year.

The response rate does not seem too high, but it is considered high as no treatment has been available thus far to treat this particular thyroid cancer. Most differentiated thyroid cancers can be treated with surgery and radioiodine to have a favorable resultant. But one out of 20 these patients end up having the aggressive form of the malignance.

Toyota Settles Over California Deaths

Toyota has reached an out-of-court settlement with relations of a family killed when the Lexus sedan they were driving sped out of control and crashed, an accident that put a national glare on the sudden acceleration troubles that later prompted the automaker to recall millions of vehicles.

Toyota corroborated the settlement Saturday in a statement but did not furnish the amount of the settlement or any other points. "Through mutual respect and cooperation we were able to resolve this matter without the need for litigation," the statement said.
